Can us mothers have a career AND be soccer mom?

Yesterday, while going for a walk and chatting with a good friend, we got on the topic of motherhood and careers. I commented that I looked forward to the day when my children were old enough to be in educational centers so I can return to graduate school and start a career of my own. She commented that she has no desire to do the same. She said she looked forward to being "soccer mom" and being more involved with her children's school and other activities. I replied that I wanted that as well. So I find myself confronted with the question...can I do both?

Perplexed,

Mommy Bridget

  1. Good question! I don't think I could do both. I'm with your friend. It's a hard sacrifice to put off what you want to do. But isn't that what we do as mothers already?

  2. I totally agree! We do sacrifice a lot to be mothers. And I think it's worth every minute of sacrifice. However, I always believed that whatever "sacrifices" I am making right now, I won't have to sacrifice later on (i.e. graduate school, career path, traveling, etc.)

I know some absolutely amazing mothers that balance mommyhood and a career very well for them and their children and although I would rather be with my child 100% in his early years, I hope that when he is older and off to school I can work on my career. And when he is out of school, I would be home...so on and so forth.

    Is this wishful thinking?
