EcoTools Review

EcoTools Review
Ever wonder what ingredients make up those make-up brushes you use on your face daily?  I do.  We spend countless of dollars yearly on cosmetic accessories...so why not have some that you know are made from eco-friendly, high quality and safe ingredients?  If you agree, Alicia Silverstone's EcoTools has just the products for you.

I had the pleasure of reviewing EcoTool's Bamboo Finishing Kabuki.  This all-purpose brush ($6.99 cost) is made with a natural bamboo handle and soft, cruelty free bristles.  The bristles contain 2 varying lengths to provide for that delicate finish you are looking for.

This brush can be used with a loose or pressed powder foundation, a blush and even a bronzer for a sheer satin finish.  The Finishing Kabuki brush makes a wonderful addition to my make-up accessories...I absolutely love how well it works and feel good knowing that it was made with the earth and its inhabitants in mind.

Product Details:
  • Expertly tapered for easy highlighting and contouring
  • Soft, cruelty-free taklon bristles
  • Natural & recycled materials
  • Reusable storage pouch
This earth-friendly brush evenly applies color to brighten up your face. And, it shows respect for the planet.  It even comes with a cute "green tip" on the packaging!  I just love this product. In addition, EcoTools joined 1% For The Planet, an alliance of businesses committed to donating their resources to create a healthier planet.  What a wonderful company to support!

Buy it:
You can purchase EcoTools products online here or at any one of their online or retail stores.

Thank you to EcoTools for letting me review one of their eco-conscious beauty products.

Magic Erasers ~ Toxic or Eco-Friendly?

Magic Erasers ~ Toxic or Eco-Friendly?

A few weeks ago, I was speaking to a friend of mine about the magic eraser. As one who likes to use only eco-friendly and nonhazardous cleaning products, I embarrassingly must admit that I have used the magic eraser in the past and I was happy with its results. I am guilty to this cleaning pleasure. And I am so because it works wonders (and by far better than anything else I've used) to removing markers from white walls and grease stains from white doors (to name a few). So this is my cleaning vice...only when absolutely necessary!

However, maybe the magic eraser isn't as bad as we all had imagined...

My friend Mel sent me this blog post about the ingredients in the magic eraser and I was surprised at what I read. So to all of you who share this guilty pleasure, you may find some peace with your environmental sin:)

Thank you Mel for sharing!

The "Doctors" Show Argues the Circumcision Ban in SF

There was a discussion on the television show "Doctors" about the ban of circumcision in San Francisco.  I highly recommend watching this discussion below which is argued by Freedom of Speech.  The beginning of the argument got to me a bit but just hang in there...the rest of the clip is highly worth your time.  (all references to any statistics or facts are displayed at the end of the clip)

Winter Blues? Try an Indoor Camp-Out!

Has winter gotten the best of you?  By this time of year, I'm feeling eager to be done with the cold, wintry conditions.  I'm ready to emerge from our house cocoons and begin preparing for the springtime with cleaning up the yard and once again letting my son play outdoors without the worries of the cold.

I'm also feeling out of ideas with which to entertain my energetic tot inside the confines of our home.

With this time of year being my usual time for planning our first family camp outs for the year (it gives me something to look forward to come the warmer temperatures), I have camping on my mind.

So for those of you feeling the same wintry effects on the soul, I have a solution.  How about an indoor camp-out?  With Dad super busy with work these days, we needed something extra fun and special to do on yet another day stuck indoors.

If you don't have a tent, make one!  As a child, we made "tents" with a blanket and chairs or something secure to hold the blanket over the top of us.  Then throw some blankets, sleeping bags, pillow and whatever you have on hand that you might use to camp.

All of our camping gear is packed away where my big pregnant belly cannot reach so I used what we had inside our home.  I included Park's little companion, Elmo, a head lamp (that apparently Elmo could only wear) and a teddy bear outside his tent to make it fun.

Park thinks it's pretty fun to pretend to go "night-night time" with his buddy Elmo.

He also enjoyed when the (teddy) bear growled at Elmo and him from outside the tent.

If you are feeling extra ambitious, when the sun goes down tell some stories or read some books around dim lights/head lamps.  You could even make some smores for an extra treat!

Hope this little idea helps,

~Mommy Bridget

Lilac's Straight Leg Tummy Trimmer/Maternity Denim Review and Giveaway- ends 1/29

Lilac Denim Review and Giveaway
In light of my current pregnancy, I had the wonderful opportunity to review a pair of Lilac clothing's denim to fit with my ever growing waistband.  Lilac clothing is a company dedicated to creating clothing for women of all shapes and sizes, whether looking for maternity pants to accommodate your changing body shape or seeking out clothing to make you feel the best you can be at any size.

I had the opportunity to review Lilac clothing's Straight Leg Tummy Trimmer Denim.  The denim jeans are not only super cute and fashionable but also made me feel great despite this extra weight around my waist.  Being pregnant can get not only a little uncomfortable at times but make it difficult no matter what you are wearing to feel fashionably dressed and still with the style of the times.

Tummy Trimmer Denim details:

  • Holds in your midsection and doubles as a panel for a great pregnancy fit
  • Extra stretchy denim that doesn't "stretch out" and retains its shape perfectly
  • Internal adjustable waistband to tailor the jeans to YOUR body
  • When bending over it looks like a shirt is tucked in  - not your underwear hanging out
  • 33.5" inseam
I absolutely love my Straight Leg Tummy Trimmer denim jeans!  The waistband is an excellent fit for my growing belly and they look fabulous.  I also appreciate that the band is long enough so not to uncomfortably cut off my belly but not too long that it feels like they reach up too high.  I also don't feel like I need to readjust the waistband like I so often do with my other maternity denim pants.  The fit is secure and comfortable.

Since I have only worn these while pregnant, I am unable to tell you how they work as a "tummy trimmer" but I cannot wait to try these out after the baby has arrived!  I can, however, tell those that are pregnant that these would be an excellent addition to your wardrobe.  And they have so many different styles and colors to choose from!

Not only does Lilac Clothing carry denim, they also carry a variety of other apparel.  Check out their Fall/Winter 2010 line!  And about their upcoming 2011 Spring/Summer line, Lilac clothing says:

This year's new line is all about fun, bright colors!  From Dresses and skirts, to Shorts and Cami's, comfort and style can be achieve at the same time!  All our tops and dresses are made with comfortable, breathable material that will keep you feeling comfortable while still looking fashionable.  Many of our pieces can be dressed up or down, and is designed to be worn before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy.  Lilac is a great buy for all types of women at any stage of life, and is perfect for those who want high quality items that can be worn again and again to make those dollars stretch.

Throwing Up the Typer's Hands

Two times a day, I open up my blogger posting page and stare at the blank canvas with which to post something new for you all to read.  Lately it seems, I can't get myself to write about much of anything except for the occasional review and or giveaway of one of my wonderful, generous sponsors...either that or, although obviously important to me, just a quick bleep of information that I read about elsewhere.

And I can't figure out why.

I love to write.  I always have.  Ever since my early preteen years, I had a journal that I wrote in almost daily.  I still have them all somewhere, packed away in a box for nobody's eyes but my own to see.  I dread the day I read about what was so important to me back when I was 13 and "loved" a boy in my class or cared about the color of Guess jeans I was wearing to school that day:)

Not much of a speaker but a great listener, I've (mostly) enjoyed hearing what others have to say.  Then later on only to interpret it in my mind after the fact, making silent judgments and decisions on whether their thoughts made the cut of approval.

I loved school...I know, I'm kind of a dork.  But give me an Algebra class and a good anthropology class on human nature and I'm glued like bees to honey.  But give me a class on economics and I still can't explain why the hell our country can have paper money and silver coins backed by our country's trillion dollar deficit.

So why can't I seem to purge out my thoughts lately on mothering and the environment and what we can do to better ourselves and our families and our community on this bleak canvas of a computer screen?  Maybe it's because my mind is only drawn to this ever growing belly beneath my chin.  Or maybe it's because my constant thoughts are of the well being of my 2 year old.  (How is he fairing?  Is he happy?  Will he EVER speak consistently?!  Will he become a math genius like his grandpa Terry or will he be musically inclined like his other Grandpa?  Will he grow one day to be a prosperous man or what will his environment hold for him in his future?  What on earth could I try to get him to eat today?!!!)  Worries worries worries...but for what?  Worrying doesn't solve anything.  It only seems to waste my mind away.

Or maybe I can't write because I'm getting sick of hearing the same stories about what to feed your children, whether you should vaccinate or not, whether you should throw out your keys and drive no more or whether or not you should home school your children.  In my pregnant mind, it's redundant.  Parenting is a pure sliding scale with which to make choices and do the best only you know how to do.  Nobody really knows what the answer is, but they sure like to act like they do!  And since my mind is so easily inclined to have all the above on my mind at any given moment in time...I choose not to write much about any of it.  At least not for now.

Or maybe it's because I've already been writing my blog for 2 years and don't want to write about the same topics over and over and over again...

On another note but still related to my writer's block, I recently broke down and purchased a handful of new novels at Barnes and Noble.  I've been so excited about reading lately, probably because I know there will be NO time in the near future to do so with a new baby on the way.  The novels I've read so far are:

And I couldn't be more pleased with my choices.  I know the first two might seem a bit morbid, but on the contrary I found some great reminders in these beautiful books with which to be thankful for the life I've been given and for the health of the people that I love so dearly.  Reading these reminded me that all the little things we worry about as parents and are so often judged by other parents don't mean much when looking at the big picture...or when looking at reality for that matter.

I don't care about what choices you've made and whether or not you think I should do the same as you...I"m just glad that whatever those choices were that they worked for you.  Isn't that all we should really care about?  That we are not only confident in the decisions we've made as parents but also that they are OUR decisions, and that by respecting one another's choices we are giving one another as parents the credit we all so deserve?

Geez, I think I'm complaining now...that was not my intent here.

My intent was, first and foremost, just to write.  I mean that is why I started my blog a few years ago isn't it?  That's what they are here for.  And next, my intent was to explain why I haven't been writing much these past few months.  (And just to warn you, I'm sure I'll be writing even less as time goes on with baby coming.)  But most of all, I wanted to say that if I'm getting sick of reading about the same aspects of parenting styles...than I'm sure many of you are feeling the same way.  I hope my blog doesn't ever feel redundant to you, but wouldn't be surprised if it did.  After all, it's a blog about mothering, natural parenting and saving the environment.  Those are pretty detailed subjects if you ask me!

So I hope you enjoy the plethora of reviews and giveaways I will be throwing at you over the coming months.  I know that my favorite blog posts to read are usually about reviews of products I'd personally be interested in.  I am doing a "New Baby Event" this spring with lots of great sponsors that I'm sure you will love to hear about and enter to win one of their products.  I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the chapter in life we call parenting.  I thank you all for your continued support in making my blog what I always hoped for it to be.

Best to each and every one of you,

Mommy Bridget

Little Changes, Big Difference

I can't help but giggle at the daily "save the environment" habits I've easily become accustomed to.  After leaving each room, I make sure lights, music and tv's are always turned off.  Whenever I run errands and need to make a quick stop at a drive-thru bank, our dry cleaners or the occasional fast food/coffee joint, I turn off my vehicle's ignition, I never leave doors to the outside ajar for fear of wasting heat, I only run full loads of laundry...and so on.  It's amazing how quickly these habits became just that, habits.  And even more amazing how quickly my 2 year old has caught on to my behavior and practices some of the same energy saving habits as well.

Our son never let's us leave a room if the lights are turned on.  Part of it is I know he loves to be in charge of turning the lights on/off and loves the recognition of doing a good deed.  But the other part I can't help but think is a little environmentalist emerging from his own personality.

And so I challenge all of you to pick one simple, easy energy saving, environmentally safe habit to embrace.  Every time I watch my son carefully turn off our lights and shut our doors to the outside, I think to myself if my 2 year old can so easily pick up on these great habits, why can't the rest of us?  If you need some ideas, below is a great list of easy habits to choose from:
  • turn off your lights and unplug unused appliances (2/3 of electrical energy used in the US in the residential sector powers lights and appliances)
  • stop idling in your vehicle (saves precious clean AIR that we breath, reduces use of power needed to operate our vehicles)
  • quit using plastic water containers!  Duh, I cannot believe people still do this.  Spend $10 on a reusable water bottle and fill it up with safe water from your home.  Most water purchased in plastic bottles comes from municipal water supplies anyways (Aquafina).
  • utilize mass transit if available
  • seal up your house (weather stripping and caulking are inexpensive and work efficiently)
  • buy recycled products if you can
  • replace old furnaces, water heaters and other energy guzzling appliances
  • reduce, reuse, recycle!
  • cloth diaper
  • replace toxic house cleaners with green cleaners (they really do work just as well)
  • plant your own garden
  • use washable hand towels versus paper towels (when you can)
  • get involved in your community (become an activist, donate your time, do something!)
  • try to plan your errands on the same day to reduce unnecessary driving)
  • keep your vehicle in good working condition
  • vote!
  • purchase clean energy
  • begin composting
  • water only during cool hours
I'm sure there are so many more to think of.  With Earth Day approaching, maybe one of these could be one of your goals?

Have a wonderful day,

Mommy Bridget

Diaper Envy's Bummis Swimmi Diaper Review and $10 GC Giveaway-ends 1/21

Diaper Envy's Bummis Swim Diaper Review and $10 Gift Certificate Giveaway

Diaper Envy, an online cloth diapering store, carries everything you need to effectively cloth diaper your little ones.  Along with popular cloth diapering systems, they also carry products to ease your cloth diapering experience.  They carry cloth diapering accessories such as wet/dry bags and effective cloth diapering laundry soap and for those of you who need assistance in your laundering needs, they also offer a cloth diapering cleaning service in the state of New York.  What a great idea!

Diaper Envy carries top name brand cloth diapering products such as Fuzzibunz, Bummis, Happy Heinys, Allens Naturally, Rockin' Green, OsoCozy, Snappi and Planet Wise.  Diaper Envy truly is a one stop shopping experience that covers all your cloth diapering needs.  What more could you ask for?!

Diaper Envy was established in 2009 by two new parents who believed that cloth diapering was a safer alternative from using disposable diapers.  They also found that cloth diapering was significantly less in overall cost and had less of an environmental impact than traditional disposable diapers.  After finding cloth diapering was a win-win situation, they wanted to share their experience with other parents.  What better way than to have an online store that helps with all cloth diapering needs!

Diaper Envy answers all of your cloth diapering questions and provides answers from those experienced in cloth diapering.  They also offer an online community of others who cloth diaper.  By becoming a "member" of Diaper Envy, you can join a social cloth diapering network of other like minded individuals.  And believe me when I say speaking to others with cloth diapering experience is a crucial part to successful cloth diapering.  In my experience I still need all the support I can get!

Park and I had the opportunity to review one of Diaper Envy's products, the Bummis Swimmi Diaper during our recent weekend trip to a pool.  The Bummis Swim Diaper is a reusable cloth diaper than fits securely and can be used without any additional covers.  It is made with an interior polyester layer that catches any mess and has adjustable straps to fit your child's size and shape, which is very important to us because we have run into trouble finding a diaper that fits just right as my little guy's shape is very unique.  I love how snug this diaper fits and how effective the diaper works during our swimming experience.

Diaper Envy's Product Description:

The grooviest swimsuit in the universe - baby fashion will never be the same!

From the Riviera to the neighborhood kiddie pool, your baby will have the cutest bum around. And rest assured - nobody will ever have to empty the pool because of your little darling! Fashion and peace of mind - what better combination can there be in a baby swimsuit ....

Engineered with painstaking attention to detail and functionality:

*A trim and attractive design that has a terrific fit on any baby

*Interior polyester mesh for easy clean ups

*Coated nylon layer sandwiched inside that will hold in the messiest stuff a baby can throw at you!

*Fun, unisex cotton prints on the outside

*Adjustable hook and loop closures for a snug and comfortable fit

*Stretchy soft lycra bindings to protect baby’s tender skin

Frequently asked questions (also by Diaper Envy):

What should you put inside the SWIMMI?

Absolutely nothing!

Can you use this pant as a waterproof diaper cover as well?

No! You can use the Swimmi as a cloth diaper cover, but you should not use the same pant for both cloth diapers and swimming. Size up for use as a diaper cover, and use with flat cloth diapers only.

I would recommend the Bummis Swimmi diaper to anyone looking for an effective yet comfortable and cute cloth swim diaper.  At a low price of only $12.75, this reusable swim diaper makes sense for not only the environment but also your wallet!  For instructions on how to clean your Bummis Swimmi cloth diaper at home, click here.  Or if you are interested in learning more about Diaper Envy's online cleaning service in the state of New York, click here.

CSN Stores Review-Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Firm Crib Mattress

CSN Stores Review:
The Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Firm Crib Mattress

When I was approached about doing a review for CSN Stores online, I was thrilled.  CSN Stores represent over 200 online stores and therefore carry absolutely anything and everything you are looking to buy.  From naturally made products for your entire family to clothing apparel to toys to luggage...they really have it all!

CSN Stores, a Boston based company, ships products all over the US and Canada.  Below are just a few of their many stores available online:
For a complete guide to their available online stores, click here.  Search their products by entering in keywords and you'll be amazed at what you find!  My personal favorite, search word "environmentally friendly" under "baby products" and see what you find...everything imaginable!  Their products are really quite "top notch", including many modern and contemporary products in design...as if they've personally reviewed each and every product before marketing them.

A great benefit from ordering off of CSN Stores online, and many shopper's favorite part about the company, is that the prices are competitive.  I discovered this by researching products I've purchased off of other online web sites.  One product I've been researching in the market to purchase is another crib mattress (due to our new addition coming very soon).  And so I decided this would be a fantastic product to review.

I chose to review the Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Firm Crib Mattress from CSN Stores.

As the coming of our new family member is nearing, I knew it was time to put the crib (which for the past year has been converted into a toddler bed for Park) back into the newborn position and get Park into his very own "big boy" bed.  We decided that we would go with the same size bed Park has been sleeping in and so we were looking for another crib sized bed mattress.  We purchased a cute toddler bed that matches our crib (since the boys will be sharing a bedroom) but still needed the mattress.  And to our excitement, the Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Firm Crib Mattress  not only fit perfectly into Park's new bed, but at a mere (on sale price of only) $68.95, it also fit nicely into our budget.

We decided to hold off from "forcing" Park to sleep in his new bed by letting his old bed remain intact for about a month therefore giving him the option to sleep in whichever bed he wanted.  After a few weeks Park, on his own accord, decided one night after bath time that he wanted to sleep in his new bed.  And just like that, he was sleeping soundly...it only took one night and he is now officially in his new bed!  The Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Firm Crib Mattress definitely played a big factor in this smooth transition.  If it weren't for the comfort, our little man would have moved back into his old bed.  And since this transition, I swear that Park is sleeping even better!  Since sleeping on his new mattress, Park has been going to bed easier and sleeping longer...something we are quite appreciative of these days.  We couldn't be more thrilled with this product from CSN Stores.

We are quite satisfied with our experience with CSN Stores.  Next time you are in the market for a new item for your household or are looking for that perfect gift, go ahead and check out what they have available on any one of their 200+ convenient online stores.  You'll be amazed at what you find!
Thank you to CSN Stores for providing us with this product for review.
